I would hate having much of a backlog under more normal circumstances, but it will be unavoidable for quite a while and it's hard to say how much will be sold as I go through everything (paying more for stuff later is more of a concern for me at the moment). I don't want to buy any more bookshelves, so it will be easy to stick to the essentials once I'm more aware of that (this problem seems commonly worse for people who download a lot/use Steam, or at least I associate this whole backlog business more with that).

Edit: This all got super weird on the previous page.

If I add visual novels in the backlog it's aaround 1000...and most of the stuff is 50+ hours long lol...

Yeah I've been avoiding super long games lately (the exception this year being DQ8). It helps that I don't care too much for vns.

Question to anyone: what constitutes a backlog for you? Is it only games you own or is it all games you plan to buy and play? I have seen plenty of people view it both ways. I think viewing it this way just makes it seem more daunting.

Same here. I've been trying to limit my lengthy games and play shorter ones.

I thought backlog was only what you had? :/
If that includes anything I might buy then I'm screwed. XD

Well you can view it however you want. What I typically do is take about 4-5 games/movies/tv shows and then finish that group of things. I guess that could be called my "active backlog". I just find the whole backlog thing to be a bit silly.

I don't bother to tally it all up. You know how I game so my process is simply to beat a game and then think about one I've always wanted to play and haven't yet.

I make a pile of things to play (or watch) and I chug through them at varying speeds.

To me, thinking about my "backlog" is counterproductive. It makes playing through games a chore because "I have to get to the next game," so I try not to think about it like that anymore. Also, I find that I much prefer playing older games that I enjoy rather than many of the newer games. Though there are quite a few "upcoming" games that I am really looking forward to.

It is one of the reasons that I try not to actively watch too many TV series or Anime series in any point. Coming home and having 15 different shows on the DVR that you need to watch is very exhausting to me so I try to limit myself to 5 or 6 shows at a time to not get overwhelmed.

I find with tv shows it's easier to binge consume them than it is to watch week to week. Some shows made for the internet seem to pretty much be made with binge watching in mind too, such as Daredevil.

Lately I've been playing more "retro" games as well (mostly turbo and psp*). I likely would have played through Disgaea 5 by now if I had a PS4 however. That's the only newer game that I have that comes to mind. Whenever I grab Cold Steel I do plan to play it right away.

*Kind of odd to think of PSP as retro but the early games are around 10 years old now.

Thinking about getting through games never really bothers me. I'm not actively trying to plot out the precise order of a specific list of X number of games though. With almost everything I really enjoyed being finished or canned I'm going to catch up with shows I had been watching when the DVD release hits. With anime I've always done it that way because I watch dubs. I wouldn't want to go through seasonal lists if I watched subs anyway, limiting myself to what's released here is a nice hard filter.
