Measuring the frequency response of the speakers? My ears are only going to get me so far.

Any calibrated mic is perfectly fine. Dayton or Behrenger's mics are fine. I have an ECM8000. If you need it to be uniquely calibrated, you have a choice of budget or something really expensive. There isn't much in between. Because it's basically those or Earthworks.

Is there much difference between the EMM-6 and the ECM-8000? Seems like the EMM-6 would be a better choice because you can fetch the response graph from their website.

And interfaces? Focusrite's Scarlett line seems well liked but I don't know if that would be suitable for measurements.

They all are just cheap electret mics. Relatively flat response. Not much difference in one or another provided you can get a calibration file for it.

Most are within 1-2 dB in most places even without calibration, so only if you are totally obsessive with it (and it sounds like you are) is a calibrated mic even necessary.

If I'm going to EQ for the room I don't see why I wouldn't use calibrated equipment.

Soooooo does it matter if it's perfect if you can't tell?

There is no point in equalizing and not doing it right. Otherwise why bother?

Any speakers can do with some level of EQ if you want the last x%. If someone wants to EQ for preference I think they should do whatever they like.

That's my take on it. I'd rather find another pair of speakers or headphones if I can't live with the stock response.

Doesn't using the same wire at the same length get close? I assume it keeps the delay down if you used various lengths. (I know my receiver asks about distance)

Does it matter much which gauge of wire? Being I'm not pumping a million watts would it matter 14 vs 16 vs 18? I don't think I'd need 12.
