True. but it may just be the way European serial numbers work. I don't have anything to compare it to but I have read that this tag is similar to a real European tag.

It's possible that some of these parts came from failed QC piles and were turned into a better working controller. Paint issues, label placement, non-working parts, etc. Someone takes them all apart and puts them back together with working pieces between a few defects.

Most people aren't going to complain about the paint issues. All they care about is that it works correctly, but Sony isn't normally going to let such glaring defects get out there on official stock.

Molds are probably readily available with as prominent as fakes seem to be.

Probably. And there is a good chance that multiple factories have been contracted to make controllers for Sony.

    Maybe it's a Canadian fake !?

I got it with a PS3 and another dualchalk for $50 years ago.

What are the main differences between legit Dualshock 3 models and is there a clear winner as far as build quality and whatnot?

I have a CECHZC2U (heavier than the newer model, the sticks have smoother movement, lower voltage) and a CECHZC2UA2 (more rubbery/matte joysticks that feel similar to Dualshock 2, the black shell is a duller shade and not quite as reflective/glossy). I know there's at least also A1 and B1 models.

My clear red DS3 that was bought direct from Target some years back (the target only color), the sticker matches LOP's except with a black background and an 'E' as the first digit in the SN.

The labels have changed, as have the internal parts. Both have the ICES and FCC and UL markings on them. Just fortunately less French. ;P

That wiki does a pretty good job of detailing all of the differences from SIXAXIS and the most recent DualShocks.

Some people prefer the analog on some models to others.

I'm expecting to open this knockoff up and find a clone that's similar to VX4. Maybe that ASUKA board.
