Jrpgs take crap for this, but outside of bioshock, I can't think of a game in the last decade or so where I was like whoa, maybe Metro. Even things like Skyrim or Witcher are eh, they make it up in other departments.

Last JRPG where I actually cared about the story was probably Lost Odyssey.

Yeah, WRPG stories aren't really any better than JRPGs, they're just more coherently told... Usually. JRPGs generally have much more creative settings, though.

Most of the game stories that actually managed to get an emotional reaction out of me are JRPGs, though.

This. This is what makes JRPG stories good to me. Not all do, of course, lots of crap, but if a game can get me emotionally attached the characters and events, I call that a good story(exceptions, of course, both ways).

Heh yeah no one playing Skyrim for the story.

I did. If gameplay was all I was after I wouldn't bother with the greater majority of games.

Yeah Jrpgs do tend to remind of CLAMP, I would assume most on here know who they are (MKR, Cardcaptor Sakura, XXXholic, Tsubasa RC), they have really good ideas, some are even grandiose but they can't actually put it together to save their life. I honestly feel anime adaptions of their works are always better, because they are more coherent and throw out some of the weaker aspects of their writing.

@Ninja that is why I really like Lost Odyssey,
    Spoiler:
    death of Kaim's daughter
was the last time I actually felt anything for a game character.
