I started up Panzer Dragoon Saga because I haven't played it in well over 10 years. Pretty much forgot everything about it other than things looking very brown. Odd little game.

    Back to Xenogears.

This is something I've been meaning to do for a while. I won this game as a part of a 'enter to win' contest from a Sega Saturn enthusiast website around when it came out, and played it shortly afterwards without knowing anything about the series. I have not played it since. Seems a good time to do so... but i have also played Panzer Dragoon since, and feel like I should play 2 as well before diving back in.

I don't think it's really necessary to play the PD games first is it? It's been so long since I played any game in this series though.

Really though it's pretty odd. After a cutscene you start off in a dungeon right off. The way you get items is kind of strange and before you know it you are riding a dragon which I guess will happen a lot. I never did get very far in the game before.

I'm not sure when I will get back to it because I want to finish Xenogears and Grandia first in that order.

You can unlock the FF7 battle theme in PDS as an easter egg.

No need to play Panzer Dragoon 1 or Zwei before PDS. However Id recommend it. Especially Zwei. It looks so amazing on the Saturn. So many graphical effects that and awesome frame rate compared to the first.

Panzer Dragoon Saga to me looks fantastic still today. Lots of subtle touches especially as the game goes on.

My favorite part of it visually from back in the day were the battles. The attacks are so varied and very colorful.

In general the PD series has a specific art style. Lots of earthy tones. Not super loud or bright like some of the time. I myself have been meaning to run through all 3 games again.

Id say its definitely worth playing through. Its not a long game at all despite the 4 discs. I think you can beat it in under 20 hours. It was actually the first RPG I ever finished so it works out for those not into long grinding games.

I remember being hohum on the game through the first disc then there was a part early in the 2nd disc that really made me love the game. Then when I read a walkthrough for one part on the 3rd disc I spoiled a moment in the game that bummed me out. I dont think Ive read a walkthrough every again lol. Overall I think its a fantastic unique game.

I plan to beat it, it's just on the back burner for now.

When I first played PDS it was on a borrowed copy from a friend since I foolishly though it would eventually drop in price.

It was a great romp and I planned to pick it up eventually, but as later rather than sooner happened more and more I knew I should just buckle down and spend the money to get it. Thankfully a friend on the PCE forums was selling a copy so I picked up his and I doubt I'll ever get rid of it.

I can see why it is a cult classic for sure. The dragon riding aspect is pretty cool.

Your description is pretty accurate. PDS is popular among the fanatics, but I don't feel it's aged well at all. The reason it's never seen a re-release might go beyond rumors of lost code, etc.
