Who has one? Do you have the CD unit as well?

After my TG16 bundle find at Goodwill a few weeks ago, it renewed my interest in playing my games again. I already have a TG16+CD attachment from a few years ago and even that is outrageous now. I might get a Turbo Duo or Duo-R eventually--we'll see. For now, my CD unit is working great.


Like everyone knows, most of the US territory games are outrageously priced. I think I am finally willing to import on this console and am interested in shoot-em-ups of the "cute" variety.

Anyone have experience with Star Parodier?

Also I thought about possibly Castlevania X Rondo of Blood for PC Engine CD. Anyone try that?

For "cute" shooters you want L-Dis and Coryoon for sure. But also make sure you pick up Ghost Warrior Spriggan (NOT Spriggan Mark 2). The original Spriggan isn't cutesy, but it's a CD-ROM shooter tour de force.

I just had my friend in Japan sent me the Ginga Ojousama Densetsu collection for PSP. Not sure what to expect from it as I'm completely new to the TurboGrafX-16/PC Engine catalogue.

The shooter in that collection (Ginga Fukei Densetsu: Sapphire) is supposed to be really good. Not sure if it's of the 'cute' variety either.

I've got a regular Turbo but no CD unit or anything, instead I'll either use my Duo-RX or the LaserActive for CD games. I've got so few US games because of prices (except the WD games), most of the stuff I play is CD (US or JP) and PCE Hucards.

I recommend a flash card personally, they are totally worth it to try out stuff before buying. Coryoon is fun but pricy, I also enjoyed Twinbee when I played it.

Yeah, I looked up the prices of Coryoon and it's way out of my price range for now. Always wanted a LaserActive, and had a chance to get it locally, but the modules are what make the unit expensive.

You can try Cotton, Magical Chase and the Air Zonk games, they're not exactly cheap though :P. There's also this import title called "Fray in Magical Adventure" I've heard it's decent though I've never played it. It's not a shooter per say but it's one of these multi-direction shooting top-down RPGs.

So Air Zonk was released on HuCard and then Super Air Zonk is on CD format (hence the Super in the title)? Is that right?

I've got several in various US / Japanese / console / portable incarnations, as well as the CD. Dracula X is a good game but I like SOTN much better. Still, a worthy game to have on the system and far better than that silly SNES version.

Sapphire is good, but not nearly as good as the Caravan shooters. People overstate the pre-rendered 3D graphics, and the game is not a worthwhile collectible unless you want to own it just to own it. It's a decent game but by no means a great game.

If you want good shooters, Soldier Blade, Final Solder, Gunhed / Blazing Lasers are hard to beat. See here:

Been a point of mine to collect all of the Hudson Caravan shooters between the NES and the PC Engine. If I had to pick a favorite it would be Soldier Blade, followed closely by Gunhed / Blazing Lasers (because Compile used to kick ass before they only made garbage moe' / fanservice games as Compile Heart).

The Gradius 1 & 2 / Parodius Da! / Salamander ports are excellent. I love Salamander because I was a big fan of Life Force as a kit. Even better are Lords of Thunder (absolutely badass game) and Gate of Thunder.

As for Cute-em-ups, there are many. Parodius (mentioned above) is a good series. Cotton is popular and the Japanese version is reasonably accessible. Detana! Twinbee is fun. Air Zonk is often a favorite of many, and there are nearly arcade--perfect ports of Fantasy Zone and Ordyne. Might as well just buy a Japanese PC Engine because it's one of the most impressive game machines ever made and has a world-class selection of shooters (the US library is pretty weak in comparison).
