OH MAN! So good. I watched these back in college and still have DVD copies.

I think it was these movies, but there is one line where he says something like, "I respect God, but I do not expect anything from him"

I edited in the correct line.

I enjoyed it but the pacing could've done with some work.

Might be that the old dvds have a different sub track. Very possible. Just looked actually, they did a new (presumably more accurate*) translation for the new DVD and BD release.

Certainly seems like deities could be more correct in this case based on the setting/era of the film.

You could be right, I watched them over 10 years ago so my memory is far from fresh with the lines.

That one has always stuck with me as I felt it kind of embodied Musashi Miyamoto as a man, and kind of as a way to live/view your own life in respect to the world around you.

Btw, if we are talking about amazing Japanese cinema yet have you watched Ikiru? That was another that really kind of helped shape how I think about what it means to be alive.

I haven't yet, but that one did make my list. I still have much of that Criterion stack to churn through.

Well get to it eventually. I don't want to hype it too much, but it is a really solid film.

I'll still need to buy it. Definitely not buying anymore until I finish the stack from last time. But yeah when I was looking up old Japanese films it looked super solid. Now that I finished a couple games I was playing, I think I'll get in some movies tonight.

That was in the stack, idk if you remembered or not. I need to finish Samurai Trilogy first.

I do. That's why I mentioned it. It's a bit dark compared to the others though. Nakadai's character is a total psychopath. It was supposed to be a trilogy so it ends on a cliffhanger, but it's still incredible.
