I can't make any sense of that series but the fanbois seem to love it. I sorta feel for the people that paid stupid amounts of money for the PS2 versions only to see it remastered as a trilogy.

Gooey is the better of the two .hack series but neither is worth what people were paying.

I rented .Hack Infection back in the day (and subsequently watched the other 3 anime discs), and couldn't get into the MMORPG-feel, but would be willing to give these set of games a try (when it drops in price more) LOL...

It's the setting not a design philosophy. The .hack// PS2 games don't play similar to MMOs. Xenoblade Chronicles is more of an offline MMO than the .hack games ever were.
