It's been so many years since I've played Vanguard Bandits, but it is one of my WD favorites. When I first played it, I wasn't sure what in the world to think. After a few stages though, I was hooked. When you really figure out the technique, you can just utterly destroy the computer. I seem to recall that the best tactic was to surround one enemy at a time, if possible, and unleash. Back attacks were really powerful.

One of the few SRPGs that I've actually played through because it's not "grindy" like some are, and battles can be finished relatively quickly to some games. Just an all around good game, though you'd never know it unless you put some time into it. I never felt that the game was tedious or boring.

The thing about VB is that you can't grind, so you have to consider actual strategy and keeping the levels fairly even on your characters.

The ones I've still never gotten around to beating that I've owned for a long time are Alundra and Arc III.

Perfectly acceptable to neglect Devlin and Barlow if you're going the Empire route.

Honestly I don't remember one branch being harder than the other.

I didn't care for Arc III in comparison to the first 2.

Regarding Alundra, this might sound blasphemous on this site, but I actually liked Alundra 2 better than the first. Alundra was a decent zelda clone, although dual hearts or crusader of centy might be better examples; but 2 to me was its only game, a fun standalone rpg.

I still need to get vanguard bandits, but I probably won't play it anytime soon so its not really a major priority, I could get it off of ebay, but there is no rush.

I guess it's an okay game, but that fact that it was called Alundra 2 instead of The Adventures of Flint or something like that is very obnoxious. I tried it and didn't care for it.

Lunar 1, Sega-CD...i was very much JRPG hungry at this point (god, i beat Super Hydlide & damn near Miracle Warriors on SMS, haha) and went in as soon as my local TRU carried it...i must've beat it 3 times soon after. Lunar 2's ads had me salivating, and then the game went & delivered more than i thought possible (Borgan fight aside...@$%^). i missed out on Vay & was burned by the Saturn's opening price but supported WD as best i could on PSX/PS2, and never forgot my appreciation for completely turning around my impression of that add-on. Thanks to them, i went back years later & tried Snatcher, some Popful Mail, Robo Aleste etc..it's crazy that 2 games can completely change how you view a system, but they did just that. and the PSX remakes were simply icing on the cake.
