If you get a moment zanth I would open it up and snap some pictures of the internal boards. Odds are that the capacitors are going out but it's not that noticeable yet. Early warning signs are low/no audio or other minor glitches.

If you look near the capacitors (cylindrical parts about the height of a dime or less) and see black stuff near them or bulging I would get it in to someone. If they are leaking I recommend getting it done sooner rather than later, the longer you wait the more damage can be done by the leaking to the actual PCB.

This reminds me of another annoying feature in old RPGs, at least the ones without good combat balance. Some games could get really picky with how you played. Either you used the specific strategy that made the fights winnable or you got your ass kicked--no choice in the matter, no real options. A perfect illustration is the Sega CD Lunar's cave of trials and that boss fight with the four dogs. Alex has a fire spell that kills each one in two hits but you can't survive long enough to finish them all off that way. Lo and behold you level up a bit and get a better version of the spell that hits all targets, making the fight trivial.

The fights aren't quite unwinnable without using the "trick" but iirc one of the recent Star Ocean games had gimmicky boss fights. I think it was 4. Haven't played 3 or 4 in many years though and both were quite forgettable.

Still more than present in a lot of JRPGs. Even with action battle systems they don't end up giving you much in the way of strategy.
