WD Trivia/Storytime Thread

Failure rate seems to be a little higher than the Game Gear. Fortunately they're easy to replace...I've had to do a half dozen or so in the past year. The only tough part is that the traces on the PCB are super easy to lift even while being careful with heat and duration. Luckily I've only lifted one trace and was able to fix it, but keep it in mind when the day comes.

Still it's better than working with the Game Gear since once you're done you have a system that's actually worth the time you put into it.

Haha, so true. I have probably a dozen or so Game Gears that's I've found at thrifts or with lots of games off Craigslist and it is really not worth my time at all to recap them all. A couple more will probably be done to slap TV out boards into and mess around with, but I can't bring myself to throw away the rest.

I really want to learn to be able to fix things like this and be able to recap these old systems. Any suggestions on a good place to start? I have literally 0 soldering experience.

I'd just like to take a min. here and thank Vic for always beeing there to answer questions and give us glimps into the world of videogame publishers and all the legal jumbo. I remember fondly the WD forums. I was at that time younger and a massive SEGA fan and WD was the kind of publisher i love despite it beeing bashed sometimes for it's customized translations that i loved. IT's what got me started doing fan translations of snes rpgs(even though I can see now that it can sometime break the commercial value of bringing certain games over afterwards), but that's what got me working with StoveTop from J2E and all those ppl. So thanks, it was fun years and i'm happy to see you try it again with Gaijinworks.

Search for Game Gear repair and you will find a few really good ones that explain everything for those systems.
If you want more general I'd say to do the same or see if anyone can show you in person.
Like anything practice helps. I have taken junk electronics (ie old printers, etc) and unsoldered parts off them for extra practice.

I'd be surprised if you found a thread "on topic" after the fist page on this forum. We tend to be quite talkative (in a good way) Though the main topic always bounces back a few pages in or so lol.

Really good advice here, I started by taking apart old misc stuff too. The hard advice for me to give is whether to get a basic cheap iron (not gun, don't use a soldering gun) to start with, or get something better. I've got a Hakko knock-off that has served me pretty well and has replaceable tips.




Also, on the topic of voice actors/actresses was the person who did the voice of Mail the same person who did the voice of Jessica? They both have that cute, yet angry, timbre. It was a good choice considering Megumi did the voice of the Mail in the JP release.

Melissa Gulden did both. Love her sassy voice, and she's a great actress (also really fun in the studio). The scene where Jessica cries when they think Alex is dead she actually worked herself into actual crying, and took a bit to stop after the take (one take!). It was amazing to watch.
