Yeah, I just don't want to pay >$40 for used Nights or Virtua Cop 2, so I bought the standard jewel case pack-in versions (minus the peripherals I already have) on ebay for closer to half of that each (and knowing the risks). This kind of stuff never shows up in the photos either . . . I also doubt many grade with such things in mind.
This is definitely not degradation of the data due to disc rot or whatnot. It's just minor wear on the screen printed side of the disc from handling, which seems more common with Sega discs due to the lack of protection on that side (they seem to skimp on the artwork/finish, which also makes them fingerprint magnets . . . and too many previous owners didn't actively clean them or probably wash their hands.

Disc rot argument is something Im not good enough to comment on. I think its more rare than anything. My Saturn collection is very large with most titles being ones Ive had for 10-15 years or even 20 and have never had one not work randomly because of age.
But there are all kinds of imperfections on the tops and bottoms of Saturn discs that can effect the play.
Generally Virtua Cop 2 longbox is very common still. I just did a quick peak on Ebay and saw some around $20 plus ship. If you are a patient you can get one $20 total.
Yeah, Nights is more pricey, but at least I would only need to replace the disc if I don't return it and later regret that. I picked up the Nights instruction manual elsewhere and it came with 3D pad documentation, so I'm closer to a complete pack-in set (I still have my old 3D pad, but lost the rest).
Yeah, the boxed version of the Nights is pricier. I have an extra full set of that somewhere but I'm not sure where exactly. Actually Nights has two versions of that box, one of which was sold exclusively through Toys R Us and even has it's own product SKU from Sega. Took me a very long time to locate one of those.
I recall playing Nights on a demo unit at Toys R Us, which sold me on the system. I didn't know anyone who owned a Saturn, so I don't believe I played anything else before buying the console. I'm pretty sure Blockbuster didn't rent them out either (though they rented out Playstations during the early longbox days; playing Resident Evil back then before I could afford a Playstation was my favorite thing to do on weekends . . . playing the first version of that game without a memory card and no auto aim option was nuts).
