I've heard a lot of commentary that it's among one of the reasons that Akihabara has become "anime capital of the world" instead of "gaming capital of the world". The widespread move to mobile probably doesn't help either.

It's been far more lucrative to export games than it has been to continue maintaining brick and mortar game shops. Those that still do exist have outrageous prices.

I personally also have a reasonable import game collection. Mostly PCE / Saturn / Dreamcast, but even some Playstation system games as well as Wii. Not as much as you guys, though, but still a few good ones.

While obviously a good deal of people have been importing games I don't think Akihabara has necessarily been plucked by non-Japanese collectors only. I think a lot of what used to be on the shelves there has been moved to Japanese online stores. Very similar to what happened in the States (or Europe), I might add.

Maybe a third of my collection is Japanese titles, but it's really very heavily weighted towards the PCE stuff in general. Next would probably be the Mega-CD (my weakeness) and then far after that would be Saturn/Mega Drive. I've got a number of Fami/SFC carts too but much less than anything else.

Personally I love the look of JP titles compared to most US ones, I just wish that I had practiced my Japanese much more since I left as it's much hard to comprehend titles than it used to be.

The PCE is catching up fast in my collection, but MSX is still king.

    96 Japanese MSX games
    79 PCE games
    11 PSP games
    10 GameCube games
    3 Vita games
    2 Mega Drive games
    2 DS games
    and 1 Wii game

Damn guys... I'm not sure how you afford all of the older stuff. My collection is only Gamecube, Wii, PS1, PS2, PS3, DS, 3DS and Vita. Gamecube being the best system ever made, of course.

Huh? Not really. Most of the Ebay/Amazon store sellers also have physical locations with those games on the shelves. If you were only referring to retail then carry on but I thought you were referring to retro.

@Tubsi: By reselling stuff I don't want from lots. Also by being early on the Dreamcast boat. My Dreamcast collection looks absurd (well I mean it IS absurd) but it cost me a lot less than it would now.

I'm really jealous of you, then. I've been wanting one for a while.

The reason I decided on Dreamcast and Saturn about 7 years ago besides loving fighters and shmups was the fact that I never saw anything for either system locally outside of stores. And 95% of the stuff at the stores was crap. Good titles for those two systems are the first thing a young Gypsy put his reselling profits towards. Aside from non-fun stuff like car repairs of course.

At this point I really want another good working DC for myself but I don't want to pay market value for one.

Just being older in general helps, I've been picking up "older" titles for the last 15 years or so. But really the last like 5 years or so prices just shot up in general. There will be a point when someone says to you "I'm not sure how you can afford all the older GameCube and PS1 stuff", and you will look at what things are going for and be amazed. And then debate cashing it all out to buy a new house or something :P
