BWAHAHAHAIn France, like in many European countries, there’s a big divide in the availability of fiber optic internet between large cities and the countryside. Members of the local parliament proposed a law amendment with the usual solution, more taxes.
The amendment notes that broadband operators earn more from ADSL over copper in the countryside, so they aren’t very eager to equipping areas outside cities with fiber optic infrastructure, leaving to the authorities the responsibility of creating them.
In order to solve the problem, the text propose to activate a territorial digital development fund. The money for the fund would be provided by a 75 Euro cent tax a month on internet subscriptions, which would generate 540 million Euro a year, plus 120 million Euro generated by temporarily taxing TV units and… game consoles.
At the moment, we don’t know is the law project or the amendment will pass, and will keep you posted on future developments.

To be honest, even in the US getting decent internet in more rural areas is a problem and no one wants to pay. The companies are happy to just invest where they will make the best returns (dense urban areas) and leave other areas pretty much screwed.
The US didn't too much better (there has always been a tax on services here to provide broadband to rural areas), but instead of building out the infratructure themselves they gave it to the companies and were like "okay guys, here is some money now build the infrastructure." They took the money, "spent it properly" and nothing was done. :|
The internet situation in France is not comparable with ours.
Having said that, game consoles have been taxed for at least a decade over here. We have to pay a 'recycling tax' on top of VAT for every new electronic device. Think it's a small percentage of the total price, but haven't really paid attention to it, since there's nothing one can do about it.

@Ele: I'm all too aware.
@Wiley: Sounds crappy but yeah, nothing to do about it.
