Im sure its been answered here, but I never played the first Nier (I've owned a used copy for years). Could I start with Automata and not spoil/miss out on too much from the first game? Or it is a title that you should definitely start with the first? I ask because I really want to at least download the demo on PS4

I hear it's completely fine to start with Automata.

There are things in Automata that definitely spoil events from the first Nier, especially if you get to the alternate endings (as I just accidentally discovered). Characters, among other things.

You would be safe to play the demo but honestly, you should just play the original first. It's a unique and interesting game.

Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking to hear. Ill probably jump into the first title this weekend. Probably be nice to progress graphically from the 1st to 2nd as well.

I still think that the original Nier's visuals hold up pretty well. Way better than the more recent Drakengard 3. Nier's animation was far more fluid and the visuals were smoother.

Nier's enemies and environments are generally simplistic, and there certainly is an "ugly" aspect about some of the characters. Ultimately I found it pretty endearing, as did a lot of people. Basically like seeing it ugly at first glance and later finding something beautiful in it. And that music. It's crazy how good it is. The voice acting is also top notch and the gameplay is solid even though it's not particularly complex.

But you've got to be prepared to give the game a chance. It really isn't going to seem like much at first, and it may even take several hours before you really start to get into it. The game has its share of problems but there also is a lot that it does very well.

And the audio alone is amazing, the soundtrack is probably one of my favorite of all time.
